Compatibility Bulletin
Product Reviewed: AppTrack from C&D Programming
Classification: License Management Utilities
Date: 4/14/93
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Compatibility Statement
C&D Programming's AppTrack v1.0 is compatible with LANtastic NOS
v4.xx and v5.xx.
Product Overview
On a typical LANtastic network, applications are installed on
several peer-to-peer LANtastic servers and are shared by a
controlled lists of users. AppTrack provides an interface layer
between the network users and the applications so that usage of the
applications can be tracked. It thus allows you to manage all
software licenses on the network, monitor usage of an application
in real time and simplify application upgrade processes, especially
if you need to upgrade from a DOS-based product to a Windows-based
product.
Product Installation Notes
The AppTrack product is designed around the LANtastic Network
Operating System, and its documentations are all LANtastic-
specific. Basically, you need to have to following steps covered:
1. Install AppTrack (on any node on the network). After AppTrack
has been installed on a machine running Windows, an AppTrack
program group will be created, which holds the AppTrack
console and other utilities. It also created 2 directories:
the AppTrack Manager directory, ATMGR, and the AppTrack User
directory ATUSER. Both directories contain the file
APPTRACK.INI, which needs to be accessed by all servers and
workstations that want to use AppTrack. This is the machine
where the database for the usage information of your
applications resides. Remember to load SHARE on this machine
for proper database operations.
2. Set up one or more AppTrack servers. Eventually, each AppTrack
server will need access to the LANtastic control directories
of all the application servers which are home to the
applications the AppTrack server needs to monitor. To set up
an AppTrack server, choose the AppTrack Server Maintenance
option under the Configuration menu from the AppTrack console.
3. On the AppTrack server, log into the machine containing the
AppTrack Manager directory. Set the environment variable
APPTRACK_DIR to point to the location of the APPTRACK.INI
file, as in,
SET APPTRACK_DIR=\\<MACHINE_NAME>\APPTRACK\ATMGR.
Please refer to the file RUNSERV.BAT for an example.
4. From the AppTrack server, log into all application servers
that needs to be monitored with a username that has all
privileges except (P)hysical and (I)ndirect. Load the TSR for
the AppTrack server (APPSVRD.exe from DOS or APPSVRW.exe from
Windows). You need to specify to the TSR which IRQ(s) are
being used on the adapter card(s) of the AppTrack server.
5. Now you are ready to add to the system applications you would
like to monitor. To add an application to AppTrack, choose the
Applications Information Maintenance option under the
Configuration menu from the AppTrack console.
6. Additional tips for installing AppTrack on LANtastic version
4.1: Make sure that the line CacheFlush=TRUE appear in the
APPSYS.INI file located in the AppTrack User directory,
ATUSER, under the [Server] section in APPSYS.INI. Refer to the
information on APPSYS.INI in the AppTrack manual for full
details.
Product Execution Notes
After AppTrack has been successfully set up, a user can now get
access to an application through AppTrack:
1. From the user workstation, log onto the machine containing the
AppTrack User directory. Set the environment variable
APPTRACK_DIR to point to the location of the APPTRACK.INI
file. For example,
SET APPTRACK_DIR=\\<MACHINE_NAME>\APPTRACK\ATUSER
2. Put the AppTrack User directory in your path, as in,
NET USE R: \\<MACHINE_NAME>\APPTRACK\ATUSER
SET PATH=%PATH%;R:\
Please refer to the file RUNWORK.BAT for an example.
3. Invoke the application desired through AppTrack's application
loader programs. For example:
APPSTUB APPL1
where "APPL1" is the name given to your application when you
defined it in the AppTrack management console. You also have
the option of creating a stub for your application and
invoking the stub instead.
Compatibility Notes
As with many other TSRs, avoid running the AppTrack server program
in DOS, APPSVRD.exe, with the LANtastic ALONE program.
