  9. Compatibility Statement 
  10. C&D Programming's AppTrack v1.0 is compatible with LANtastic NOS
  11. v4.xx and v5.xx.

  13. Product Overview
  14. On a typical LANtastic network, applications are installed on
  15. several peer-to-peer LANtastic servers and are shared by a
  16. controlled lists of users. AppTrack provides an interface layer
  17. between the network users and the applications so that usage of the
  18. applications can be tracked. It thus allows you to manage all
  19. software licenses on the network, monitor usage of an application
  20. in real time and simplify application upgrade processes, especially
  21. if you need to upgrade from a DOS-based product to a Windows-based
  22. product.

  24. Product Installation Notes
  25. The AppTrack product is designed around the LANtastic Network
  26. Operating System, and its documentations are all LANtastic-
  27. specific. Basically, you need to have to following steps covered:
  28.  
  29. 1.   Install AppTrack (on any node on the network). After AppTrack
  30.      has been installed on a machine running Windows, an AppTrack
  31.      program group will be created, which holds the AppTrack
  32.      console and other utilities. It also created 2 directories:
  33.      the AppTrack Manager directory, ATMGR, and the AppTrack User
  34.      directory ATUSER. Both directories contain the file
  35.      APPTRACK.INI, which needs to be accessed by all servers and
  36.      workstations that want to use AppTrack. This is the machine
  37.      where the database for the usage information of your
  38.      applications resides. Remember to load SHARE on this machine
  39.      for proper database operations.

  41. 2.   Set up one or more AppTrack servers. Eventually, each AppTrack
  42.      server will need access to the LANtastic control directories
  43.      of all the application servers which are home to the
  44.      applications the AppTrack server needs to monitor. To set up
  45.      an AppTrack server, choose the AppTrack Server Maintenance
  46.      option under the Configuration menu from the AppTrack console.

  49. 3.   On the AppTrack server, log into the machine containing the
  50.      AppTrack Manager directory. Set the environment variable
  51.      APPTRACK_DIR to point to the location of the APPTRACK.INI
  52.      file, as in, 
  53.  
  54.      SET APPTRACK_DIR=\\<MACHINE_NAME>\APPTRACK\ATMGR.

  56.      Please refer to the file RUNSERV.BAT for an example.

  58. 4.   From the AppTrack server, log into all application servers
  59.      that needs to be monitored with a username that has all
  60.      privileges except (P)hysical and (I)ndirect. Load the TSR for
  61.      the AppTrack server (APPSVRD.exe from DOS or APPSVRW.exe from
  62.      Windows). You need to specify to the TSR which IRQ(s) are
  63.      being used on the adapter card(s) of the AppTrack server.

  65. 5.   Now you are ready to add to the system applications you would
  66.      like to monitor. To add an application to AppTrack, choose the
  67.      Applications Information Maintenance option under the
  68.      Configuration menu from the AppTrack console. 
  69.  
  70. 6.   Additional tips for installing AppTrack on LANtastic version
  71.      4.1: Make sure that the line CacheFlush=TRUE appear in the
  72.      APPSYS.INI file located in the AppTrack User directory,
  73.      ATUSER, under the [Server] section in APPSYS.INI. Refer to the
  74.      information on APPSYS.INI in the AppTrack manual for full
  75.      details.

  77. Product Execution Notes
  78. After AppTrack has been successfully set up, a user can now get
  79. access to an application through AppTrack:
  80.  
  81. 1.   From the user workstation, log onto the machine containing the
  82.      AppTrack User directory. Set the environment variable
  83.      APPTRACK_DIR to point to the location of the APPTRACK.INI
  84.      file. For example, 
  85.  
  86.      SET APPTRACK_DIR=\\<MACHINE_NAME>\APPTRACK\ATUSER 
  87.  
  88. 2.   Put the AppTrack User directory in your path, as in, 
  89.  
  90.      NET USE R: \\<MACHINE_NAME>\APPTRACK\ATUSER 
  91.      SET PATH=%PATH%;R:\
  92.  
  93.      Please refer to the file RUNWORK.BAT for an example.

  95. 3.   Invoke the application desired through AppTrack's application
  96.      loader programs. For example:
  97.  
  98.      APPSTUB APPL1
  99.  
  100.      where "APPL1" is the name given to your application when you
  101.      defined   it in the AppTrack management console. You also have
  102.      the option of   creating a stub for your application and
  103.      invoking the stub instead.

  105. Compatibility Notes
  106. As with many other TSRs, avoid running the AppTrack server program
  107. in DOS, APPSVRD.exe, with the LANtastic ALONE program.
